Acupuncture is a traditional form of Chinese alternative medicine therapy. Thin needles are placed in certain points of the body depending on the therapy needed. Since this is an alternative therapy, it may be considered pseudoscience in the medical community. A study done in 2013 on the effects of Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture showed significant improvement to aging skin. Let’s get into the facts about acupuncture for anti aging.
Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture
Facial cosmetic acupuncture is a procedure in which small needles are inserted into the layers of the skin of the face and neck. This alternative treatment is said to work on fine lines, wrinkles, and even acne. This is a great alternative to people that don’t want to undergo treatments such as Botox or fillers. FCA not only helps to balance our chi ( life force energy), but it also may improve the skin due an increase in collagen production improving acne and acne scars.
The average treatment involves about 40 tiny needles inserted into different points in the head and neck. Much like when you cut yourself the body has the natural reaction to heal by forming new skin, this is the same way FCA works. By inserted these tiny needles the body is tricked into producing new elastin and collagen therefore smoothing wrinkles and fine lines.
FAC Treatment
Typically before starting an FAC treatment, the acupuncturist will start a very thorough intake evaluation. Not only do they need to know about your skin issues but also your complete health history such as sleep patterns, digestion, stress you may have and your menstrual cycle if you’re a woman.
This complete health history will help your acupuncturist to understand how your internal health may be reflected in the skin on the face, such as inflammation, acne and wrinkles then your provider will formulate a plan. The provider will then insert up to 70 tiny needles into the skin and its virtually pain free. You may feel a relaxing flow of energy as the needles are inserted.
The treatment lasts about an hour. The treatment is non-invasive and after the treatment you cannot wear makeup for about 4 hours, while the skin starts the healing process. The results of this treatment vary from person to person and for optimal results you may need up to ten sessions once or twice per week.
After about 10 weeks, you can go to the maintenance stage where you come in once every two months or so. The average cost can vary depending on where you are getting the treatment, the cost is about $30 per session and the price for full body acupuncture is around $1000.
