There are so many products out there for anti aging and wrinkle repair, but some people prefer a more natural approach. Essential oils are great for so many things so I set out to see if they could be used in anti aging and fighting the signs of aging in our skin. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years, before all the drug store products were developed. Here are the 10 best essential oils for anti aging.
As we age our skin loses elasticity and causes our skin to break down causing wrinkles and fine lines around the mouth, nose, and forehead and neck. Essential oils don’t completely erase wrinkles but are a great natural alternative to many topicals out there. Using essential oils the correct way can brighten and firm the skin with continued use. You can even create your own skin products specific to your skin type. Top 10 best essential oils for anti aging:
Lavender is known for its relaxing scent and has been used in aromatherapy for ages. There are studies out there showing the benefits lavender has to our health. In 2013 a study was conducted on the antioxidant effects of lavender and they found that lavender oil helps protect the brain against oxidative stress.
Antioxidants are a powerhouse against aging, not only topical, but when consumed in our diets regularly. They’re known to help reduce the look of wrinkles and fine lines so applying lavender oils to the skin could also help. Some people may be allergic to lavender, so you should always do a patch test first before using on your skin.
Clary sage is an herb similar to the sage many people use as a spice. It has a sweet aroma, and has been shown to have amazing antioxidant effects. A study back in 2003 shows that Clary Sage may actually protect proteins and DNA from damage of free radicals, which are chemicals in our environment that can cause skin damage,( discoloration, fine lines, wrinkles, sagging). Before trying the clary sage oil on your skin, just as with all of these examples, test first on a small area of your skin to make sure there will not be any irritation.
Rosemary is another herb known for its flavor as well as its antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. The antioxidants in Rosemary may help the look of anti aging, by fighting the free radicals that break down our skins elasticity. A study conducted in 2014, found that as little as 10 milligrams per kilogram of weight per day showed excellent results in the reduction of free radicals
Lemon is an amazing antioxidant full of Vitamin C, one of the most powerful antioxidants. Not only is this great for metabolism and our immune system, lemon oil is used in some products to fight the signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. Lemon has also been shown to reduce sun damage and oxidation which may lead to signs of aging. Many citrus oils out there such as grapefruit can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight so make sure to stay out of the sun for several hours after using citrus oils, I would suggest just using them before bed.
Pomegranate helps a variety of issues and is excellent for our health. Its nutrient rich and a great addition to our everyday diets. In 2014 a study showed that pomegranate oil may reduce oxidative stress preventing new fine lines and wrinkles from forming. When applied to the skin its also been shown to reduce inflammation and prevent the growth of new cancer cells. This powerful antioxidant may also reduce the appearance of sun spots.
Studies have shown that Sandalwood may reduce inflammation and can help add moisture to the skin. When our skin is properly hydrated, it will look refreshed and plump, causing it to look younger.
Often we will see Ylang Ylang used in perfumes. A study done in 2015, has shown Ylang Ylang to have some antioxidant effects that could renew the skin. Ylang Ylang was shown to help rebuild the skins fats and proteins while reducing free radicals. Many skin companies out there now use it in their products to aid in skin renewal.
Rose not only has that one of a kind scent, but studies have shown Rose oils to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which helps to reduce redness and puffiness in the skin. Rose oil is helpful for skin cell renewal to keep you looking younger.
Frankincense not only smells amazing but one study shows that Frankincense reduces the appearance of stretch marks and scars on the skin and may have the same effect of wrinkles and fine lines. It has also been shown to promote new cell growth and is a great skin toner.
Cinnamon not only smells amazing but it has amazing anti inflammatory effects due to the antioxidant compound cinnamic acid. This has also been shown to reduce inflammation from acne.
How To Use Essential Oils On Skin
Essential oils can be inhaled or diffused, but when applying them to your skin they need to be diluted in a carrier oil first. Some common carrier oils include:
- Coconut Oil
- Olive Oil
- Almond Oil
Mix the oils well in a bowl and the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy suggests using 3-6 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil for sensitive skin, and for normal skin 6-15 drops per ounce of carrier oil. Always make sure to do a skin patch test on a small area of the skin for 24 hours to be sure you won’t have any allergic reaction or irritation. If no irritation occurs, then you may use on your skin once or twice per day.
Using essential oils for anti aging can be a natural way to combat wrinkles, discoloration, fine lines, and sagging skin. Just be sure to use a carrier oil mixed well and if you have any signs of an allergic reaction ( hives, redness, rash, swelling), you need to stop using immediately.
In severe cases an allergic reaction could cause airway restriction so get medical help right away. Never drink essential oils they’re toxic. You need to buy your oils from a trusted source ( here I found one on Amazon) and there is no guarantee they will completely erase wrinkles, but they could help tremendously.
